Why This Hot Drink Is Better Than Instant Hot Cocoa

Posted on Posted in recipes

Have you always hated instant cocoa?

Perhaps you never did, but I still hate it. Even boxed chocolate beverages. They taste watered down and disgusting.

This homemade hot chocolate drink is simple and quick. And it takes no more than 10 minutes! Rich, thick and full of flavor.

Just for your information, below are the ingredients of popular instant cocoa mixes and chocolate beverages.

Hot Chocolate Drink
A beverage that takes no more than 10 minutes to make!
Cook Time 10 minutes
Servings
person
Ingredients
  • 1 tsp ceylon cinnamon (optional) (5 mL)
  • 3 tbsp sugar (44 mL)
  • 3.5 oz 85% dark chocolate (100 g)
  • 3/4 cups Milk (177 mL)
Cook Time 10 minutes
Servings
person
Ingredients
  • 1 tsp ceylon cinnamon (optional) (5 mL)
  • 3 tbsp sugar (44 mL)
  • 3.5 oz 85% dark chocolate (100 g)
  • 3/4 cups Milk (177 mL)
Instructions
  1. On medium heat, melt the chocolate in a pot.
  2. After it has fully melted, add milk, sugar and cinnamon.
  3. Stir with a spatula for 2 minutes or until well mixed. Do not boil.
  4. Remove from heat and serve in a 1.5-cup (355 mL) sized mug.
Recipe Notes
  • Taste and adjust accordingly. I don't like ultra-sweet food so you might want to adjust the amount of sugar for your taste. If it is too rich, add more milk.
  • The only locally sourced ingredient is the milk, which is from Stryk Farm.
  • Not all chocolate is created equally. I specifically use 85% cocoa because some dark chocolate are processed with alkali, use several grams of sugar, or contain soy ingredients (e.g. soy lecithin).

  1. I am not a fan of anything instant- nothing beats the real thing, and I just love your recipe. I always add – like you – a little bit of cinnamon to my hot chocolate, it makes a world of difference. Blessings!
